I guess I didn’t do my due diligence on the International Wine Festival held last night, Saturday, Jan. 23, in Hollywood, Calif.
When I received a half-price notification for the event from Gold Star, I figured, "Hollywood and wine (pun not intended), who can pass that up?" Turns out, I should’ve.
First off, I thought it was being held at the iconic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (pictured), but it was down the street at the modern Hollywood Renaissance Hotel next to the Kodak Theater. Second, it was an event populated solely by vintages from a place called K&L Wines, which is fine except the place is 35 miles from my home.
All was not lost, however, even as most wines were routine and downright undrinkable at times. I discovered one gem that warrants a visit to the parent in Paso Robles, Calif., and this was from a winery called Vina Robles. The gem was the winery’s 2007 Petit Syrah, Jarine, a nice 93 points from Wine Spectator and delicious in its own right.
Of course, Hollywood is a treat in and of itself, so after about an hour of good, bad and worse wines, i ventured out onto Hollywood Boulevard, past Grauman’s Chinese and over to the Hotel Roosevelt, which itself was deeply disappointing, small and uncharming. The street scene, with all the freaks and costumed hawkers, was more than enough to send me home early to view taped cooking shows before drifting off to sleep.
