Actually, my sole motivation for walking into Heroes for lunch was that it had a bar, and I was alone and wanted to plop on a stool anonymously and sample the fare. Moreover, I didn’t even know the name of the place until I looked at the menu and it said, "Heroes, Fullerton and Claremont." Then it dawned on my that I had a couple of years past been to the Fullerton location for a work luncheon–and went away completely unimpressed.

Would it be different this time?

No, not exactly, but last time I hated it (maybe it was the company), and this time I found some things to like. First, for those who love big portions, that’s the modus operandi here. Second, it’s better if you like protein–there’s lots of it on the menu, mostly meat for hamburgers and sandwiches, but you’ll also find some fish, turkey, ham and the like. At the bottom of the menu, there are some lighter fare items (salads).

I ordered the blackened Mahi-Mahi, expecting a filet or two along with the two listed sides. Instead, I got some whittled-up slices looking like steak fries with a chunky salsa of mango and papaya on top (I mean, the pieces of the fruit were about the size of marbles). A heaping mound of corn and another of rice smothered the fish so that the Mahi-Mahi strips were hardly noticeable.

Everything tasted all right, but a couple of filets of Mahi-Mahi with an ounce or two each of rice and corn would have properly reversed the portions.

Bottom line: If you share the philosophy that "big is invariably beautiful," then Heroes is for you.

Tapas, anyone?
