Bravo to Launch New Series ‘Top Chef Masters’

On the heels of what it says is the best season yet for Top Chef, Bravo TV announced today that it is producing a spinoff called Top Chef Masters, which will pit celebrity chefs, 24 of them, against one another until only one–the Top Chef Master–is left standing. The Master will then get to donate an uannounced sum to his or her favorite charity.
Kind of like Iron Chef meets Top Chef.
A start date has not been announced, but an inside source said it would be in spring 2009, which leads me to believe it will commence after the proper hiatus following the conclusion of this season’s Top Chef.
Pictured at right is the host, Kelly Choi, a New York-based food journalist with her own show called Eat Out New York. (Don’t get me started on stretching that title.) Restaurant critic Gael Green, culinary expert James Oseland and food critic Jay Rayner will serve as judges.
Each episode of Top Chef Masters holds two challenges for the chefs. The first is a twist on the classic Quickfire challenge, which tests their basic abilities, and the second is a more involved Elimination-style challenge designed to test the versatility and invention of the chefs as they take on unique culinary trials such as working with unusual and exotic foods or catering for a range of demanding clients. The food will be tasted and evaluated by the judges and a wide range of tasters for whom the challenge is aimed, whether it be patrons at a five-star restaurant or a room full of hungry kids. The food has to appeal to the diner as well as the critics if the chef is to survive.
Can’t wait–especially to feast my eyes on that Korean-American beauty of a host.
