Pelican Grill: Grand View, Grander Prices
Posted on October 20, 2008
The Pelican Grill is part of the posh Pelican Hill resort overlooking the Pacific Ocean from its perch atop a hill in Newport Coast, Calif.
The restaurant advertises a lot, and the view from the veranda looked splendid, so my wife and I headed out there last week to sample things.
Indeed, the view on this sunny, 90-plus-degree day was soothing and spectacular.
As for the menu, it offers enough options from salads, pizzas and sandwiches to entrees of fish and meat, so that if you choose wisely, you can get by almost affordably. But my wife and I had our sights set on fish. She got the cedar-plank salmon, which arrived–disappointingly–without the cedar plank–and I got the Ahi Burger with french fries (pictured). Hers was $34 for the fish and another $8.50 for side veggies. My complete package was $18. Unfortunately, I also ordered a glass of wine, a Sauvignon Blanc, for $11, which is not much less than one could buy the whole bottle for at a good discount wine shop.
Taste-wise, well, let me put it this way: I judge whether a restaurant’s food is worth if, after tasting it, I conclude I couldn’t make it at home–and make it at home better. On all these dishes, which were fine enough, I did conclude that I could do better at home, and I’m no professional chef. (All the food was decidedly fresh, however.)
The service was absolutely professional and courteous, and the overall experience fine, but I wouldn’t venture back for the food, especially in these tough economic times.
The inside dining room was quite plush, so this would probably be a wonderful place to splurge on a special occasion, but I think I’d try the steak that the Pelican Grill is noted for.
