Great Red Discovered at San Antonio Winery

Posted on October 12, 2008

San Antonio Winery Tasting Room in Ontario, Calif.I’d always looked down on San Antonio Winery since it was located in downlown Los Angeles (the only winery there) and was noted for cheap table wines.

Or so I thought.

The other day I stopped by the San Antonio Tasting Room in the Inland Empire (there’s one at the L.A. winery as well) and tried some whites on a complimentary basis.

Even though it was about 102 outside, and to my way of thinking too hot to imbibe red wines, I also took advantage of an $8 flight of artisan reds.

The Windbreak Pinot Noir made of grapes from the Santa Lucia Highlands near Monterey, Calif., was light and fine.  The Rhone blend called Heritage was even more robust and somewhat interesting, but the biggest surprise of all came in the form of a wine I’d never even heard of before–Petit Verdot.

The winery’s 2005 Opaque Petit Verdot is dark, bold and delicious, made of 100-percent Petit Verdot grapes and aged in oak for two years.  Turns out that the grape is usually blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, but this unblended version is one of the more spectacular wines I’ve ever tasted.

Worth a visit, but go quickly.  There are only a couple hundred bottles of this wine still available.
