Following a scent/hint I received while tasting beers at the Los Angeles County Fair, I headed out to find the Stuffed Sandwich, which was recommended as a fairly good eatery but mainly as a repository of the world’s greatest beers.
On both counts, the advice was correct. In fact, the place has the largest selection of beers in California and ranks ninth in the nation for its huge selection of more than 700 brews.
Sam and Marlene Samaniego opened the first iteration of the brew pub in 1976 and moved to the current location (in a strip mall in San Gabriel, Calif.), in 2003. Their roots are in hops, and they’re more than happy to guide you to the beer that best suits your taste.
But beware, you have to order food to get the beer, or at least to take it home with you (unopened bottles, of course). I guess it has something to do with the law.
When I was there today (Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008), Sam was busy taking care of regulars, and Marlene was busy preparing food, but Sam did lead me to two fine beers, one a porter and one a stout from Belgian (he specializes in Belgain and California micro breweries), and that damn stout was one elegant piece of artwork.
I also enjoyed a BLT, which was good enough, but the macaroni salad I ordered with it was something pretty splendid. I’ll have to check it they make it or buy it, but it’s a real delicate concoction.
I didn’t write down the names of the beers I had, so I’m planning to head back as soon as I can and do some serious beer discussing with Sam and Marlene (of course, I’ll eat too–don’t want to break the law!).
