This is my second year in a row attending the Orange (Calif.) International Street Fair held each Labor Day Weekend and featuring food-and-drink stalls and entertainment.
This year, though the fair itself is almost exactly the same as last year insofar as major booths are concerned, two things have changed: One is me, and the other is the weather.
As for the weather, in this summer of our global warming made glorious by the summer son of Obama (to paraphrase the Bard), it’s at least 20 degrees cooler than last year.
As for me, since I’ve been on a diet to watch my health, I have a totally different reaction when walking among the revelers and food booths.
For one, it has absolutely been confirmed to me that every joke ever created about "a man and his beer" (pick your wording) is absolutely true when it comes to American men. I could find nary a man who didn’t have a cup of some peepee-tasting American beer snuggled up to his lips. (I think I was the sole exception with my iced tea.)
Second, the foods that Americans crave–and devour at these events–are a) fattening and b) diabetes type II-creating. I kept walking around gazing at the fat bellies and wondering, "What stage of diabetes is this person in?"
Of course, health is each person’s individual concern, as is diet, but the deadly combination of diet and health is, sadly, not something must people care to think about–until it’s too late.
Just last year, I gobbled up Irish bangers and Japanese beer. This year, to go with my iced tea, I looked for a Greek Salad but could find none. In fact, not a single salad was available.
