The Thai fruit rambutanOne of the most impressive exhibits at the recently concluded Western Foodservice and Hospitality Expo was the official Thai pavilion.

Not only did the pavilion host cooking demos by Tommy Tang and others, but it offered abundant free samples, including bags of Jasmine Rice with cookbooks.  Impressive.

I didn’t try the Thai beer and wine, being on a fairly strict (if temporary) diet, but I gobbled up the Thai fruits being offered.  I thought the tamarind a bit too gooey and sticky and the lychee too familiar, but the rambutan, with it s prickly, scary exterior, yielded an interesting taste treat inside.

I enquired about the smelly but supposedly delicious durian, but the server just laughed at me.

I guess I’ll have to save my durian experience for a trip to Thailand, where, as Tommy Tang says, a visitor is always greeted with a smile.  "Whether they like you or not is another thing altogether," Tang quickly adds.  But at least the Thais will smile as they serve you and take your money in exchange.

Compare that to Paris and Parisians.
