There was a reason rum was called "demon rum" in Colonial days. First, there was its connection to the slave trade, and second there was its power to enebriate and incapacitate.
But damn, is it yummy!
Spurred on by a recommendation from a drinking buddy in Philadelphia, I picked up a bottle of Mount Gay Rum from Barbados and another bottle of Gosling’s from Bermuda.
I mixed both (separately, of course) with ginger ale and began my taste test.
The Mount Gay is smooth as silk, but so is the Gosling’s–with more body. Both are yummy, yummy, yummy–and deadly.
I then tried adding a squirt of lemon to each as my Philly buddy recommended when he said my taste test was incomplete without the fruit.
I didn’t find that the lemon did much except add a citrus-y tang. I think I prefer the drinks without the citrus.
There you go. You can’t go wrong with either.
My next test: I’ll use them to make mojitos and see how those turn out. More yum, I expect.
