With the sole exception of Guy Fieri, who actually exceeded expectations by far even after winning the competition, the first three seasons of The Next Food Network Star were more like The Next Food Network Graveyard. Those pills from season one still appear as judges in faraway food contests in places like Forgottenville, N.D., and I’m not sure if last year’s winner (Amy? so forgettable) even lasted a season. A not-so-shining track record.
That leaves Guy Fieri–and last night.
Food Network this year seems finally to have gotten the proper pieces in place, or maybe just plain lucked out.
The three finalists for 2008–Lisa Garza, Adam Gertler and Aaron McCargo Jr.–all turned in masterful, entertaining and sharply focused theme pilots for the ultimate throwndown (sorry, Bobby).
As polished as they were, however, Garza was too transparently better-than-thou and Adam too transparently in love with himself, leaving the down-to-earth and highly likeable "Big Daddy" Aaron as the winner.
Aaron deserved it, being the most down-home cook of the three to go along with his completely accessible and fun personality.
Good luck to you, Aaran, as your Big Daddy’s Kitchen debuts next Sunday, Aug. 3, at 12:30 p.m.
