Zov's Bistro in Tustin, Calif.I’d always heard and read great things about Zov’s Bistro in Tustin, Calif.  Chef-owner Zov Karamardian turns out a simple-sounding Middle-Eastern-Mediterrranean menu with all the familiar names, but judging from my one brief visit yesterday, with quite unfamiliar (read: spectacular) results.

Let me put it this way:  I’ll definitely be back, and more than once.

The rap on the menu is that it’s pricey, which it is.  The appetizers are mostly all above $10 and often close to $15, so you can imagine the entree prices.  And I’m just referring to lunchtime, when I visited.

However, kudos for the best-tasting Greek Salad I ever had.  The lemon-mint dressing is what makes it special.  Every few bites or so, you’ll ingest a bit of mint, and it just makes the whole experience soar.

Turns out, as my server Cassandra explained, the kitchen marinates the olives, tomatoes and cucumbers in the dressing before preparing the salad, so pieces of the mint stick to those items.  My only suggestions would be to cut the cucumber pieces smaller and add some more feta cheese, but the taste is just out of this world as it is.

Zov’s also has locations in Irvine and Newport Beach, and next door to the bistro is Zov’s Bakery, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers some less expensive items.
