Frenchy's Bistro next to Riley's Tavern in east Long Beach, Calif.I saw an ad about a month ago for a restaurant I’d heard of but never really considered visiting.  Until….

I read that Frenchy’s Bistro featured a Wine and Tapas Bar in additing to its restaurant.  I had to try something as unique as that, especially when the menu featured things like escargots, crab bisque, sand dabs, pork medallions and beef strogonoff, with nothing higher than $12.

Though I originally planned to order escargots (haven’t had any in years) and sand dabs, I was talked into the crab bisque (though I really wanted to try the potato leek soup special).  My mistake.  The bisque had a strong shellfish aftertaste to it, which could be quite natural to crab bisque but for which I wasn’t prepared.

The sand dabs, however, were just about perfect, and they came with a potato salad and sauteed vegetable medley of carrots, grape tomatos and haricots verts.

As an added bonus, I discovered a place next door named Riley’s Pub, where I had a Guinness and purchased a commemorative tee-shirt.

And, oh, yes, both of these worthy establishments (Riley’s qualifies as a dive, but I like dives) are in a relatively low-rent area of Long Beach, Calif.  I like that–quality results in an unsuspected place.
