Fishermen in the Chesapeake Bay used to earn good incomes by harvesting oysters in the winter and taking the rest of the year off, but by the 1980s, they had raked the place nearly clean.  Today’s oyster population in the Chesapeake is about 1 percent of what it was a quarter of a century ago.

Now, blue crabs are disappearing too, overtrapped and living–and dying–in increasingly polluted waters.  Maryland has even set limits on the number of female blue crabs that can be caught.

On top of that, no one can afford to buy blue crabs anymore anyway, nor can fishermen afford the $5-a-gallon diesel fuel needed for their boats.
