Taste of the HeightsFor the past five years, I’d driven by a sign announcing an event called "Taste of the Heights," but I always forgot to attend to check it out.  This year I finally made it.

Background:  Taste of the Heights is a community event centered on food sampling that is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation for residents of Rowland Heights and Hacienda Heights, neither of which is an incorporated city.

Local restaurants and vendors (Costco?) show up to offer free food samplings, usually in extraordinarily small sizes.  Most of the stuff I tried was not even as good as homemade, but two Mexican restaurants–Casa Blanca and Casa Alvarez–served not only tasty but also fairly generous samplings.  The first let you choose between chicken, pork and beef tacos served with chips and salsa.  The latter featured enchiladas, beans, guacamole and tortillas.

The one booth that seemed to sum up the evening’s proceedings was run by Hot Dog on a Stick.  And what were they serving?  Lemonade.

I don’t think I’ll be returning for the sixth annual iteration of Taste of the Heights.
