Iron Chef, the original series, had a half-hour tie-breaking competition when scores ended up evenly matched, but the problem is that neither Food Network, former host, nor Fine Living Network, current host, has ever to my knowledge shown these run-offs.
This happened on Friday when Iron Chef Chinese Chen Kenichi, who specializes in Sichuan dishes, squared off against Hotel Nikko Tokyo chef Liang Shuqing, who specializes in Cantonese preparations. The duel ended in a dead heat, with two judges’ siding with each chef and a numerical tie to cap it all.
When I checked my DVR recordings from last night this morning, I found an Iron Chef listed, so I quickly turned it on, expecting to see the half-hour run-off. Instead, it was a repeat of the Friday contest that ended in a tie.
If anyone has ever seen the run-off for this episode and knows how it turned out, please let me know. My bet is that the judges hurriedly moved to the Iron Chef’s side.
