Coliseum Redux: Add Margarita Jones to the Demise List

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! As much as I praised the site Urban Spoon yesterday, I now have to confess that its restaurant listings for my jaunt to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum were woefully dated. Margarita Jones was boarded up, and a whole [...]

For some reason I got this stupid itch to attend a baseball game tonight at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to honor 50 years of the Bums–oops, Dodgers–in El Lay.
Problem is, however, that more than 100,000 people are expected with parking available for about half that many, if that.
So, rather than eat the rather expensive nose-bleed [...]
WineStyles: Good Value for Everyday Wines

For months, I watched as a spot in Brea, Calif., was converted from an art gallery to a wine-tasting shop.
A couple of weeks ago, the watering hole finally opened. Okay, I shouldn’t say watering hole, but basically I look upon wine shops, at least the ones offering tastings, as places to sip and nip.
I paid a [...]
Court Busts Starbucks for Sharing Tips with Managers

In a ruling that could reverberate through the food service industry, a court in San Diego, Calif., has ruled that Starbucks must reimburse its baristas some $106 million for sharing tips with their managers. The practice is forbidden by California law.
Starbucks is appealing the decision, but with the law in place, it seems unlikely that [...]
‘Top Chef Chicago’: Dale Becomes This Year’s Hung

Until this season of Top Chef, I thought I’d seen the ultimate in a chef’s arrogance in season three’s Hung, he of the considerable Oedipus Rex complex.
However, Dale in the new season has proven Hung’s equal if not superior in his sheer desire to throw everyone under the bus and not show an ounce of compunction [...]
From Dodgertown to Las Olas

I made a quick jaunt to Florida recently, and this past week I already reported on my visit to South Beach and the Euroesque atmosphere in its dining scene. However, the main reason for my visit was to say goodbye to Dodgertown in Vero Beach as the Los Angeles Dodgers plan to switch spring training sites from [...]

My title sounds more salacious than it is. When I was (unfortunately) part of corporate America, management used to come up with these schemes to whisk all the employees away for a weekend to recharge them with a bunch of insulting self-introspection (read: humiliating oneself in front of everyone else) and rally-to-the-cause nonsense. We called [...]

Probably very few of you are old enough to remember Manhattan’s (and Philadelphia’s) Horn & Hardart chain of diners. Here’s how it went: You enter a dining space, and up against one side is a long line of what looks like post office boxes with windows on them. See a piece of pie inside one [...]

Last night marked the debut of the fourth season of Top Chef called Top Chef Chicago.
As happy as I was to see one of my favorite shows return, I wasn’t too happy with what I actually witnessed.
Though the producers and hosts had touted this fourth crew of contestants as the best and most professional yet, on [...]
Picking the Best Easter Ham

With Eastern Sunday coming upon us soon, it’s time to look at the traditional Easter meal of ham. [tag]David Rosengarten[/tag], who now runs a blog/newsletter called "Tastings," offers some sound tips, but then he goes overboard with a link to buy what he recommends as the "best ham."
Well, whatever, every blogger is entitled to monetize [...]
