If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!I doubt any of you had as much time on his or her hands as I did yesterday to catch both Boy Meets Grill at 11 a.m. and Emeril Live at 7 p.m.
Both chefs tackled Asian cuisine, one professionally [...]

Bubba Burgers Prove Tasty and Popular

Posted on February 27, 2008 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

Popular with me and my dog, anyway.
I’d always noticed these boxes in the frozen food section with the name Bubba on them (with burger in lower case), but not until Target had a sale on Bubba did I try it out.
I purchased the version with the Vidalia onions in the mix, and the patties are indeed tasty.
Since [...]

Restaurant Cleanliness and Safety Issues

Posted on February 25, 2008 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

My local newspaper, the Orange County Register, did an investigative piece on restaurant safety.
When I scoured the list of restaurants with the most grievous and frequent violations, including rat infestations and spoiled foods, I was shocked that most of them were either Mexican or Vietnamese, two of my absolute favorite food types.
Even one of the [...]

Oops: Soy Sauce and Rice Don’t Mix

Posted on February 23, 2008 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

One of the gaucheries in food life, at least from an Asian perspective, is to put soy sauce over steamed rice (or any type of rice), but that’s exactly what I saw happen today on a soy sauce taste test on America’s Test Kitchen.
Even though soy sauce is basically a cooking ingredient much like worcestershire [...]

What Happened to the Octopus?

Posted on February 21, 2008 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

Did any of you watch Emeril Live last night (Wednesday, Feb. 20)?
His guest brought an octopus to be cooked, and Emeril made a big deal of how you had to cook octopus in boiling water with wine corks, which dutifully happened.
However, halfway through the show, Emeril turned off the power on the octopus burner, and we never saw [...]

Martha Stewart Inc. Buys Out Emeril Lagasse Inc.

Posted on February 19, 2008 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

Almost, anyway.
It appears that Stewart’s Omnimedia Inc. has tendered between $50 million and $70 million in cash and stock for Lagasse’s TV shows, cookbooks, cookware and just about everything except his 11 restaurants, which are probably worth ten times what she paid for his subsidiary adventures.
I wonder if this means that his shows will switch [...]

‘Ultimate Recipe Showdown’ Shows How to Fix ‘Iron Chef’

Posted on February 18, 2008 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

Last night I watched Food Network’s new show, Ultimate Recipe Showdown, in which home chefs compete in various approaches to a single food and then are judged by hidden-away panels.
This is what I’ve long argued would make Iron Chef America at least somewhat credible:  Get the damn judges out of the show, sequester them away [...]

‘America’s Test Kitchen’ Wins Again

Posted on February 12, 2008 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

After posting my comments on America’s Test Kitchen and its Coq au Vin episode, I stumbled upon an episode of Food TV’s Barefoot Contessa in which the chef, whatever her name is, attempted a Coq au Vin.
Let me tell you, if the look of the dishes means anything (which it certainly does), then the Test Kitchen [...]

Equipment Ratings on ‘America’s Test Kitchen’

Posted on February 11, 2008 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

I’ve taken to watching America’s Test Kitchen, which is on public television, for a variety of reasons.
The first reason is that I’m just so sick of all those egotistic Hollywood wannabes over at Food TV.
Rachael Ray is trying to make herself into a human version of Mickey Mouse, ubiquitous and with her hands in everything.  What’s next, [...]

Year of the Rat Bonus: Free Cookbook

Posted on February 9, 2008 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment

Well, even though I had mixed success with my spring rolls, the Year of the Rat is upon us, so I’m offering a free e-book on 100 Succulent Chinese Recipes.
I’ll be the first in line to try some of these recipes since my first attempt proved so–shall we say?–eye opening regarding my manual dexterity and [...]
