If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! No, I’m not referring to drug trafficking or illegal immigration, both of which are quite understandable, but to the end of the four-hour business lunch, which is not in the least understandable.
I mean, if your business ethics include drunken, [...]
The Sauces Behind the Fast Foods
Posted on November 26, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment
Turns out there’s a place called Golden State Foods, named obviously after California but with its test kitchen in Georgia, that creates most of the sauces for fast food chains like McDonald’s, Arby’s and KFC.
The company’s connection to the Golden State, evidently, springs from its processing plant in City of Industry, Calif., not far from [...]
Worst Thanksgiving Dishes Ever

Hats off to ESPN radio sports jock [tag]Colin Cowherd[/tag] for his segment yesterday on "worst Thanksgiving dishes." I heard a slew of awful concoctions, but the only one I can remember is Jello with cauliflower and other veggies floating in the jiggly substance. I hope none of you encounters this type of abomination today.

Shopping at my local Japanese market yesterday, I noticed a new display featuring something called Every Burger.
Those were the only two words in English on the pacakge, so I was curious about what was inside. Clearly, it couldn’t be anything like a real hambruger since it was sitting out on an aisle and not being [...]
Gordon Ramsay Shows Some Compassion

In Wednesday’s episode of Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon Ramsay showed both compassion and restraint. I actually got the feeling that he cared for the owners of an Irish Pub/Restaurant called Finn McCool’s. (Being Irish, I took exception to that ridiculous name, but still I watched.)
Of course, emotion and conflict still abounded, but either the producers and [...]
Not Longevity, But Long Levity Maybe

As reported by Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times, here is a conversation between Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith on TNT’s "Inside the NBA":
Barkley: "I was reading that heavy drinking is not good for your health, so I have to stop."
Smith: "Stop drinking what?"
Barkley: "No, I gotta stop reading."
Antidote for ‘Iron Chef’ Pretentiousness: ‘Check Please’

While flying to Las Vegas last week for the BlogWorld Expo, I read a brief article in the flight magazine about a TV restaurant-review show called "Check Please." Now, rather than using gasbag "professional" reviewers, the show uses volunteers–consumers like you and me. Great concept!
The show is the brainchild of a producer named David Manilow, but [...]
Symon Tops Besh in Top Chef Competition

I’m not even sure what his credentials are, but Michael Symon bested John Besh (who at least owns some restaurants) for "The Next Iron Chef."
When all is said and done, I keep asking myself, "Would any of the current Iron Chefs survive the competition that Symon, Besh and the others just endured?"
And the answer is, [...]
‘Kitchen Nightmares’ Casting Call Part II
Posted on November 9, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment
I generated at least two comments yesterday when I questioned whether Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares TV series was indeed a reality show, or a scripted show, or a combination.
Despite one commentator who sought to assure (and scold) me that the "Now Casting" notice on Wednesday’s episode was a call for volunteer restaurants, I think a lot of [...]
