Last night’s "Kitchen Nightmares" featuring [tag]Gordon Ramsay[/tag] was particularly poignant, I thought.
Featured was the Olde Stone Mill Restaurant in Tuckahoe, N.Y. owned by Dean and Barbara. I know that [tag]Bill Clinton[/tag] used to say, without having the slightest truth to it, "I can feel your pain" (more likely, he could feel your votes’ rolling up), but I truly felt the pain of Barbara while watching last night’s episode. Ever the male, Dean had a hard time letting go of his ego.
Dean and Barbara are a beautiful couple who own a beautiful restaurant, restored from an old stone mill by Dean himself. Problem was, at the outset of the show, the restaurant’s food was awful, the service indifferent, the chef burned out, and Dean stuck in a rut.
Hats off to Gordon, who was able not only to challenge Dean to take charge of his life and his vision for his restaurant, but also to come up with a winning focus for Dean and the Olde Stone Mill–a steak house.
I assume everyone lived happily ever after, but there was no real postscript at the end of the show. At least, the owner didn’t immediately sell to pay off mafia bills after Gordon worked his magic, as was the case a week ago.
I sincerely hope that Dean and Barbara are doing just fine with their reinvigorated restaurant–and menu.
