If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!Of course, I have experience only with my local race tracks, but insofar as [tag]Santa Anita Race Track[/tag] is concerned, I say–go enjoy the food and forget the bets.
Since the Oak Tree Meet is closing this Sunday, and also [...]
Never Say I Didn’t Warn You

I actually just finished watching my recorded version of last night’s "Next Iron Chef." (The World Series took priority.)
With the elimination of chef [tag]Aaron Sanchez[/tag], my warnings have come true.
I previously predicted that judge [tag]Andrew Knowlton[/tag] had it in for Sanchez, so Sanchez’s elimination last night was pretty much guaranteed.
Earlier, I also speculated that the competition [...]
Only in California: The Beverly Hills Diet

By "only" I refer to the fact that only in California could some off-the-wall loser come up with an unscientific diet and make big bucks from it, but that’s the tale of [tag]Judith Mazel[/tag] and her Beverly Hills Diet. Ms. Mazel died a week or two back at 63, but no one is ever going [...]

Granted, I don’t know any of these people, but I can make fairly informed judgments about other people’s judgments, as most people can.
I’m referring here to the judging panel on "The Next Iron Chef," which Sunday night eliminated [tag]Morou[/tag], one of the chefs I picked to be left standing in the final round, and [tag]Gavin [...]
Bickering Foodies: Do These People Matter?

In his latest newsletter, [tag]David Rosengarten[/tag] referred to a congee (Asian rice gruel) riposte (as he called it) he had with a former-here-and-former-there food critic by the name of [tag]Arthur Schwartz[/tag], an unknown to me.
Now, food people arguing over food can be enlightening, I suppose, but I kept wondering why Mr. Schwartz was so former. [...]
Secrets of ‘Iron Chef’ Revealed

Someone going by the name of Magenta Fusion, claiming to have insider knowledge, sent me this:
To me the problem is not the judges, but rather the so-called Iron Chefs themselves. If you disagree, then just have a look at their scores. Even with a very tilted playing field in favor of them winning, they still [...]
‘Kitchen Nightmares’ Shows Families’ Lives on the Line

Last night’s "Kitchen Nightmares" featuring [tag]Gordon Ramsay[/tag] was particularly poignant, I thought.
Featured was the Olde Stone Mill Restaurant in Tuckahoe, N.Y. owned by Dean and Barbara. I know that [tag]Bill Clinton[/tag] used to say, without having the slightest truth to it, "I can feel your pain" (more likely, he could feel your votes’ rolling up), [...]
None Dare Call It Sexism

I’ve written before how I feel that "Iron Chef America" stacks the judging deck against the challengers, but now I have my suspicions about what’s going on with "The Next Iron Chef," whose second episode aired last night.
So far, the only two female contestants have been eliminated in succession, with [tag]Jill Davie[/tag] getting last night’s [...]
Cast Iron Cooking

I caught an "Iron Chef" rerun last night (in which the competitor got stiffed again) and heard the all-knowing [tag]Alton Brown[/tag] remark that the best cooking comes from cast iron kitchenware.
That reminded that I had purchased a bunch of cast iron cooking vessels from Big Lots (I’m not sure if they have Big Lots where you live, but it’s [...]
Peter Peters Out: Just Another Bad Dream
Posted on October 11, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment
First came the redemption and resurrection and then the sell-out.
Throughout "Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares" last night, a man named Peter, who inherited the Seascape restaurant in Islip, N.Y., from his father, struggled with summoning up the guts to take charge and make the place successful.
With Gordon’s assistance, Peter did just that. Of course, it helped that [...]
