I went, I saw, I failed. That’s my take-off on veni, vidi, vici ("I came, I saw, I conquered") from Julius Caesar. However, I just went about 25 miles to Santa Monica, Calif., to attend a Bastille Day celebration.
I [...]
Five Best Hotels in the World

The results are in, and this hotel in India called the Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur, India, has captured Travel and Leisure’s top hotel ranking in the world.
I love hotels, especially their lobbies and bars, though their restaurants tend to be overrated and overpriced. People watching and the excitement of visiting new locales–and frankly, just being away from [...]
Bastille Day Recommendation: Salade Nicoise

Continuing with my theme of Bastille Day, I picked up the Orange County Register today and found that food editor Cathy Thomas recalls her "summer of love" (1967) in Paris and shares her recipe for salade nicoise.
It looks so yummy that I thought I’d share here it as well–Cathy Thomas’s salade nicoise.
What Do the French Eat on Bastille Day?

To put it bluntly, I have no idea. I scoured the Web for people in the know, and there are none. There are plenty of people willing to tell you what they’d eat that day, and there are plenty of sites’ promoting Bastille Day celebrations and restaurants’ touting menus for the holiday.
But no one could [...]

[tag]Jack In The Box[/tag] is featuring its all-new Sirloin Burger, at least out here in California where I reside.
Over the weekend, I gave the sandwich a try. I was impressed by half of it. The lettuce, tomato, pickle and cheese were all fresh and tasty, and you get to order them to your liking–for instance, [...]

The Utah-based restaurant named [tag]Chadder’s[/tag] has survived a lawsuit by California-bred [tag]In-N-Out Burger[/tag], which claimed that Chadder’s had stolen both its menu its and its decor and server uniforms. Stolen as in copycatted, and lawsuit as in, "You must go out of business."
Chadder’s was smart enough to change its look (out with the red, in [...]
July 4, 1776: Let Them Eat Corn!
Posted on July 4, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment
The colonists in 1776 who decided to seek independence from Britain were a divided lot. The lower classes could afford only corn, but the upper classes turned down its collective nose on corn in favor of wheat products.
Lower-class menus comprised stews usually while the upper crust had more varied menus.
On one thing they all agreed, [...]
The Meat That Sang on Broadway

When I used to live in Monterey Park, Calif., there was a Hawaiian fast food joint that sold sushi made of this stuff, which turns 70 years old on this very day.
Can you guess?
Stress and Sugar Fatten the Belly, But Help Is Near
Posted on July 2, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment
Good news for those of you like me who have had, at least since the 20something phase, a protuding belly. Researchers have not only found the cause of this–stress and consumption of high-sugar, high-fat foods (surprise, surprise!)–but have evidently also discovered a magic elixir to prevent the belly fat and even reduce it after onset.
Evidently, [...]
Supremarket Tricks to Sucker You In

Why is shopping at a grocery store more expensive than we intend it to be unless we’re super-disciplined?
Well, that’s because they place kids’ stuff within easy reach of the kids and tantalize us with beginning/end-of-the-aisle displays of so-called specials (which sometimes actually are good bargains).
