A Cheesy Affair

I’d been angling to get back to [tag]Frog’s Breath Cheese[/tag] in Orange, Calif., to sample one of the store’s wine tastings. So on a Sunday afternoon I ventured back and discovered that the downtown streets were closed for a classic car show. Undaunted, I drove around until I found a spot just a block or so from my destination. So far, so good.
I paid my $25 for what was called “Staff Picks” and sat down for a flight of five red wines. After the first half-ounce tasting (so little it was hard to swirl), the server, who appeared to have just turned 21 and was probably a Chapman College student earning some bucks, asked me how it was.
“What was the alcohol content of that wine?” I asked in reply. Dumbfounded that I would even ask such a question and not knowing the answer, he rushed back to get the bottle but the owner answered from afar and said, “14.8.”
Just as I figured. The wine had a “hot” taste to it that usually means it’s an alcohol monster. The rest of the wines except one were all high alcohol and tasted “hot.”
The kid serving me never did figure out my interest in the alcohol content, but whenever he served he a half-ounce, he would proudly announce the alcohol percentage. Oh, well, so much for staff picks.
The car show was fascinating, however, so my afternoon turned out fine despite the heat of the wine.
