If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!Probably a great portion of the U.S. is oblivious to the Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo (Fifth of May), celebrating a great Mexican victory over the French forces of Napoleon III. However, here in Southern California, [tag]Cinco de [...]

Normally I try to post Monday through Friday, but yesterday two things kept me from reaching my goal: That pesky tooth, and an even peskier problem with my hosting service. The site was simply down most of the day.
Back to the root problem (get it? haha), that tooth. The diagnosis was an infection caused by [...]
Rediscovering the Hot Toddy

I came down with near death for the past couple of days, thanks to a cranky root canal (as near as I can figure) that then managed to incapacitate the rest of my body. I now understand how one of our prehistoric ancestors, Neanderthal man or whoever, died from dental caries.
As with most reversals and sufferings, [...]
Vietnamese Food: Often the Perfect Balance
Posted on April 25, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment
I live not far from the largest [tag]Vietnamese[/tag] community in the U.S., which of course is in Orange County, Calif., where a recent special election placed the first Vietnamese-American in a county supervisor’s seat.
The Vietnamese, who were long colonial subjects of France, were able to blend on their native soil the perfect fusion of Asian [...]
A Cheesy Affair

I’d been angling to get back to [tag]Frog’s Breath Cheese[/tag] in Orange, Calif., to sample one of the store’s wine tastings. So on a Sunday afternoon I ventured back and discovered that the downtown streets were closed for a classic car show. Undaunted, I drove around until I found a spot just a block or [...]

Following up on yesterday’s review of [tag]San Diego Padres[/tag] hot dogs, I’d like to salute the food scene in this coastal city, one of the most charming and seemingly most hospitable places to live in the United States.
First, the ballpark and its locale:
Hot Dogs of Summer: Part II

I’ll have to get back to my low-carb diet anon, as I just visited [tag]Petco Park[/tag] in San Diego, home of the [tag]Padres baseball team[/tag], on my continuing quest to find the best ballpark dawg.
So far–sorry, Pads’ fans–the [tag]Grilled Dodger Dog[/tag] rules. The Padres advertised their dogs as grilled too, and I actually saw them [...]
Five Diet Tips: Part II
Posted on April 18, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment
Here’s another tip/approach you can adapt to your dieting regimen–eating foods that either curb your appetite or fill you up, nutritiously, while keeping the caloric intake down. For instance, I was always told (who knows if this is true?) that eating a carrot or celery stalk burned more calories in chewing than it added in reaching your [...]

[tag]The Griddler[/tag] by Cuisinart is just the type of gadget I like. It’s compact, cooks just about anything, and you can haul it anywhere–provided you have a source of electricity. Plus, it drains the grease off as you cook for a cleaner result.
There’s nothing like charcoal, but in the meantime for those other occasions, there’s [...]
Five Tips to Dieting
Posted on April 16, 2007 - Filed Under Food News | Leave a Comment
Okay, I don’t really have five tips, but some pointers here, especially about salt and sugar substitutes.
First, for my current diet, which I started after visiting the doctor for a routine check-up and discovered that I gained eight pounds in six months (egads!), is a modified, almost-pure [tag]Atkins Diet[/tag], in other words, a low-carb diet.
Does it [...]
