Going to [tag]Phlight[/tag] restaurant and wine bar on Valentine’s Day was both disappointment and revelation.

The revelation was the city of Whittier, Calif.  I’ve lived in Southern California most of my life and was born here but never spent much time in or near Whittier.  Turns out it has some of the nicest bedroom communities around, along with a charming old downtown where Phlight (combination of flight of wine and Bright Avenue) is located.

How was the dining experience?

First off, Phlight is a smallish venue, holding maybe 75 people, and I’m being generous with my math.  So patrons can get crammed in.  As for the approach to food, Phlight serves what it calls family portions designed to be split among the members of your party.  So, for instance, if they bring out a soup, you get additional bowls so others may share it.  This was actually a nice feature, as the three of us enjoyed a rather delicious zarzuela, which is like a Spanish version of bouillabaise. The other foods were decent but nothing to write home about.

My main disappointment was with the two wines I tried, one a Syrah and the other a Cabernet.  The Cabernet actually was pretty good since it was from California’s Alexander Valley, which produces mellow, tasteful grapes.  But both were overpriced and under-poured.

Verdict–worth a try, especially for the zarzuela (which is also a form of theater).
